Doctor Who fans were in for a treat when Peter Capaldi's new Series 10 companion was introduced during the FA Cup semi-finals halftime. But did Pearl Mackie pay a subtle homage to the late Prince in her first photo as the replacement to Jenna Coleman's Clara Oswald?

Mackie, who will play Bill (?!) in the tenth series of Doctor Who, was all smiles in her picture with Capaldi's Time Lord. Although it certainly looks like she is excited to take on the role of the Doctor's new companion, some eagle-eyed Prince fans were even more thrilled when they noticed the artsy shirt Mackie's Bill was wearing in the image.

Hi-Fi Color founder Brian Miller was quick to post about the tribute in his official Facebook page, which also reveals where the design from Mackie's shirt is from. It is the art featured in the vinyl insert sleeve of Prince's Purple Rain LP.

The world was shocked when it was announced that a fatality was found in Paisley Park and it turned out to be the legendary musician. The cause of death is still unknown but the artist's remains have already been cremated in a private ceremony. Prince was only 57 years old.

The tenth series of Doctor Who will also be the last for current showrunner Steven Moffat. The head writer will be replaced by Chris Chibnall.

There has also been speculation that Capaldi will be leaving Doctor Who shortly after Moffat's exit. However, the actor has confirmed that he has been asked to remain with the show.

"I've been asked to stay on, but it's such a long time before I have to make that decision," Capaldi told Radio Times in March.

Mackie's Bill is expected to debut as Bill when Doctor Who returns in the Christmas Special this December.
