J.J. Abrams, Colin Trevorrow Both Tease the Answer to Rey's True Identity in 'Star Wars'

Star Wars: The Force Awakens may not reveal who its heroine Rey's parents are, but director J.J. Abrams and Colin Trevorrow knows who they are. The famous director, producer and apt secret-keeper teased the details to a crowd at TCA on Wednesday.

Abrams, who was at TCA to promote his and Cameron Crowe's show Roadies, said of Rey's parentage, "I know quite a bit." He went on to say, "Obviously it's not for me to talk about in this moment because this is Rian's story to continue now. The last thing I'm going to do is reveal something that he would be upset about. I want to make sure that Rian gets the courtesy that he showed me."

Rian Johnson is set to take over from Abrams for Star Wars: Episode VIII. Abrams' comments would imply that the question of Rey's parentage (which many speculate to be in some way related to the Skywalker family, or perhaps Obi-Wan Kenobi) will be answered in the next film. But recent comments by Colin Trevorrow, who is set to direct Star Wars: Episode IX, could suggest otherwise.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Trevorrow said that he's seen all of the online theories, and he promises that "we're going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying, because Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens but in the entire galaxy, and she deserves it."

Fans who are dying to know the answer sooner shouldn't worry too much, however, because it would stand to reason that in order to begin preliminary work on Episode IX, Trevorrow would have to know the script for Episode VIII.

Johnson's Episode VIII is slated to hit theaters May 26, 2017. Trevorrow's Episode IX will have a 2019 release date.
