Chris Martin's Girlfriend Annabelle Wallis Lands Rachel Weisz-Like Role in 'Mummy' Reboot

Annabelle Wallis, best known for playing Jane Seymour in The Tudors and dating Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, has joined the upcoming reboot of The Mummy, where she'll be co-starring with Tom Cruise. Much like Rachel Weisz did in a previous movie franchise, Wallis will be playing an archeologist, as Universal Studios prepares its new classic monsters film series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the British actress is in talks to become the most recent addition to the monster movie, which will be hitting theaters next year. The film, which will be set in the present day (unlike the franchise starring Weisz and Brendan Fraser), will star Cruise as a special forces soldier, while Wallis will be playing a scientist.

Similarly, the previous film series also featured a man of action and a woman of science as the two leads, and the two ultimately become a couple.

Also in the cast is Kingsman: The Secret Service actress Sofia Boutella, who will be taking on the title role of a female Mummy in the film, presumably as the main antagonist.

Wallis has been very busy in the past couple of years. Variety reports that, besides her current work in the British drama Peaky Blinders, she was also part of the 2014 horror film Annabelle and has at least three major films coming out this year: the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy Brothers Grimsby, currently in theaters; the upcoming Guy Ritchie-directed King Arthur epic and Zack Whedon's thriller Come and Find Me.

Not long ago, it was reported that Oscar-nominated actor Johnny Depp was also in talks to join the growing on-screen monsters universe, playing the Invisible Man, as the studio is planning to create an Avengers-like world filled with monsters from classic literature.

This strategy has gained traction in a few other franchises, including a King Kong vs. Godzilla film announced for 2020, since studios have seen the success of crossover franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In any case, the first film of Universal's monsters world, The Mummy, will be released on June 9, 2017.
