'Indiana Jones 5' Confirmed: Steven Spielberg to Direct Harrison Ford in 2019 Disney Sequel
Since Disney bought off Lucasfilm, rumors have swirled about a reboot of Indiana Jones, and now it's been confirmed: Steven Spielberg will direct Harrison Ford in the 2019 project.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm announced the project Tuesday, saying fans would see Indy come back to fight the bad guys July 19, 2019. By the time this film hits theaters, it will have been 11 years since 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Ford's last outing as Indy.
This is the third time in recent years that has Ford reprised a popular early role: He played Han Solo in last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and soon he'll start filming a still-untitled sequel to Blade Runner, over 30 years after playing Rick Deckard in the original 1982 Ridley Scott film.
No other casting announcements for the Indy sequel.
As Coming Soon reports, the announcement might mean a few tweaks in other releases. The final film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 3, Inhumans, is set for a July 12 release of that same year, barely one week before the Indy sequel. Seeing as both are Disney properties, it seems likely the release date for the superhero movie will change.
This also marks al interesting new development in Lucasfilm: seeing as Star Wars: Episode IX will also be released in 2019, this will be the first time movies from the company's two major franchises will premiere the same year.
