The NFL world has suffered a major loss. Ex New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was murdered last night. The star was apparently shot and killed in a road rage incident gone terribly wrong.

The former defensive end was driving around with his wife when the tragic event took place. Smith has kept a low profile since his exit from the New Orleans Saints.

According to TMZ, witnesses say that 6 to 8 shots rang out shortly after the fender bender and the former footballer was found slumped over the steering wheel.

Last night the shooter was taken into custody for questioning. As of right now, the shooter, Cardell Hayes, is using the infamous "Stand Your Ground" law as a defense for his actions. Hayes has been booked and is currently charged with second-degree murder.

Authorities explained that Smith and his wife were driving their luxury Mercedes Benz SUV and it was rear-ended by the shooter's Hummer H2. Smith confronted Hayes and the verbal confrontation then escalated once the driver of the Hummer took out a handgun and shot Smith multiple times. The shooter took things a step further and shot Smith's 34-year-old wife in the leg.

According to MediaTakeout, Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith's wife is currently hospitalized. There is no word on her condition.

The police have recovered the gun.

The New Orleans Saints organization has shared their condolences via social media for their tragic loss. Many other football stars such as Russell Wilson have also taken the time out to share their condolences.
