Did Tom Holland's Spider-Man Help Black Panther Get a Bigger Role in 'Civil War'?

It may be hard to imagine Captain America: Civil War without the involvement of Marvel character Black Panther, but screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have just admitted that Chadwick Boseman's character wasn't initially supposed to have a large role in the film! In addition to that, the fear of not having Tom Holland's Spider-Man in Captain America 3 actually led to T'Challa becoming a major part of the Marvel flick!

Markus and McFeely recently spoke to CinemaBlend, where the writers stated that Black Panther initially had a smaller role in Civil War.

"Originally, T'Challa and T'Chaka were just the representatives of Wakanda, sort of the voice of other countries in the world going, 'You people are out of control,' and then to be aggrieved by possible Bucky actions," Markus said, revealing that the transformation of Boseman's character was supposed to happen in the Black Panther film.

"Frankly, just not have him be Black Panther yet [in Civil War]," Markus continued. "He's getting his own movie, you know. He's the prince of a country! That's pretty good for a movie."

The screenwriters also shared that Peter Parker was originally the only addition to the Civil War line-up and that they had big plans for the character until they feared that the deal with Sony would not push through.

"Maybe we get to play with Spider-Man and all that," Markus said, adding that they decided to give Black Panther a bigger role in the film when things got iffy with the webslinger.

"When things maybe looked like we weren't going to get Spider-Man, it was like, 'Let's put the costume on that guy!' And then he became so integral to the story as it evolved that once Spider-Man came back, we didn't take him out," he confessed. "So, it was a problem that created a really nice situation."

Captain America: Civil War will hit theaters on May 6.
