Record Store Day 2013: MGMT Release Teaser For "Alien Days" Cassette Single
MGMT, the band behind "Electric Feel" and the phrase 'Oracular Spectacular', have released a teaser trailer for their Record Store Day 2013 release "Alien Days." Keep in mind that this from MGMT, as the clip promoting their contribution to RSD 2013 (a cassette single, by the way) is suitably weird.
The stop-motion teaser is the sort of thing we've come to expect from Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser. First, a copy of "Alien Days" crawls its way into a tape deck. Then, a sock puppet is shown driving the car before blasting it off into space. Then things get weird. The psychedelics and quick cuts of nonsense, home movies and sock puppets dancing must be what dreaming is like for David Lynch. Oh, and you get to hear a bit of the song, too.
It sounds dreamy, lazy, psychedelic and overall, nice.
Alien Days will presumably be a track on their long-awaited 3rd LP, a follow up to 2010's headtrip Congratulations. Expect the album to be even-weirder than the group's usual output as the duo recorded it alone, in a cabin in Buffalo, New York, according to Rolling Stone.
"We're not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it," Goldwasser is told the magazine.
A tentative release date of June has been set by the band.
What do you think of MGMT's Record Store Day teaser? Will you be snagging a copy of "Alien Days" on April 20? Do you even have the means to play cassettes anymore?
