Lauryn Hill Sued for Eviction

Lauryn Hill, five-time Grammy winner, is being sued for eviction from the mansion she has been renting in South Orange, New Jersey.

Hill has been renting the mansion since 2009, but her landlord claims that she stopped paying her bills last month, according to TMZ.  As a result, the landlord went to court and filed a legal ultimatum that states, "Pay your rent NOW, or get out."

She has not paid the rent and, in addition, she will also be sentenced next week for tax fraud, TMZ reports.

"The troubled artist is also accused of owing more than $1.6 million to tax authorities," according to the New York Post.

"A separate suit filed against her by the state of New Jersey notes that she also owes $446,386 in back taxes to the state" reports Entertainment Weekly.

Hill pled guilty to three counts of failure to file tax returns for 2005, 2006, and 2007, when she earned more than $1.8 million during those years, according to TMZ.  In addition, when asked if she "intentionally and willingly" did not file returns in court, she replied, "Yes."

She pled guilty and, as a result, she faced up to 3 years in federal prison and a hefty fee, about $75,000 in fines.  She was released on $150,000 bail and has a sentencing hearing scheduled for November, TMC reports.  The sentence will be announced on Monday, April 22.

Hill has filed legal documents that request for her sentence to be limited to probation, since it would make it easier for her to pay back what she owes, according to Entertainment Weekly.  The documents state that she did not pay the IRS because she "withdrew from society at large due to what she perceived as manipulation and very real threats to herself and her family."

EW reports that these claims are very similar to those made in a blog post she created when the charges were first brought against her.  They claim that she had disappeared from the public view due to a "climate of hostility, false entitlement, manipulation, racial prejudice, sexism and ageism" in popular culture.
