'Deadpool' director brings 'Sonic' to the big screen

Sonic the Hedgehog is planned to have his own movie, and Tim Miller will be at its helm as executive producer. This comes after Miller's recent departure from Fox's Deadpool sequel due to creative indifferences.

Miller will be working with Jeff Fowler, a fellow collaborator at Blur Studio, on this project. IGN points out that this movie will serve as Fowler's debut as a director in a feature film. The duo, who received an Oscar nomination for the movie Gopher Broke in 2005, will have Neal H. Moritz as a producer. Patrick Casey and Josh Miller, responsible for Golan the Insatiable, will be penning the script.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the team's goal is to make the CG-animated/live action adaptation of the blue blur and the gang. Miller states that the world of Sonic provides Fowler an opportunity to use his experience in the realm of animation to give life to the iconic hedgehog. While the plot of the story has not been revealed yet, it is possible that it will be in line with the original Sonic storyline, which revolves around his rivalry with Dr. Robotnik.

The Sonic the Hedgehog series, introduced by SEGA in the early 90's, features a group of anthropomorphic animals who go up against the schemes of Doctor Eggman Robotnik, which are usually centered on world domination. Games are usually composed of Sonic (or another character, like Tails the fox or Knuckles the Echidna) running around stages, collecting rings (and later on, gems), leading up to boss fights on certain stages of the game. The titular character was made in response to Nintendo's Mario, and became one its main rival for sales in its heyday.

Sonic is not limited to video games, however. The blue blur had his share of several animated tv shows.  Sonic, along with Eggman, also made cameo appearances in the movie "Wreck It Ralph", where Eggman was one of the attendees of the "Bad Anon" counseling session, and Sonic giving a PSA message, reminiscent of "Sonic Sez" from the old tv shows.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is set to hit the theaters in 2018.
