Jamie Hahn, democratic political strategist, died on Wednesday after she and her husband were stabbed in their Raleigh, North Carolina home by Jonathan Broyhill, who had been the best man at the couple's wedding in 2009.
Broyhill, 31, worked for Hahn at her political consulting firm and had been a longtime friend of of her husband, Nation Hahn, according to UPI.
The attack occured on a monday night, when the three routinely gathered at the Hahn home for supper, friends said, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Former Democratic U.S. Rep. Brad Miller said he hired Sky Blue for fundraising help in 2010 and he said that, Broyhill was the primary person with access to fundraising software, according to the Raleigh News Observer.
"Some of the things that Jon said about the campaign finances were inconsistent with other information," Miller said Wednesday, according to the News Observer. "It's probably the case that Jamie was asking questions on behalf of the campaign about campaign finances. I think it's bound to be part of the investigation of Jon's motive," Miller said.
Broyhill was charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, however, Raleigh police said on Wednesday that they expect to upgrade the charges to murder, the News Observer reports.
He was arrested and taken to WakeMed due to self-inflicted injuries, said Jim Sughrue, police spokesman, according to the News Observer.
The attack occurred on Monday evening and Hahn died in the hospital on Wednesday.
A neighbor says that she and her husband were present after the attack had occurred, according to ABC's WJBF- TV. "My husband grabbed some towels and applied pressure to her wounds," the neighbor told the station, and she asked not to be identified.
"Nation was telling her that he loved her, and she responded back saying, 'I love you'..." the neighbor told WJBF- TV. "Those were the last words she said."
Her husband, Nation, was also stabbed, but has been released from the hospital.
"I have no idea what I am going to do without @jamiehahn. She was my center, my rock and my soulmate," Nation wrote on Twitter, according to Softpedia.
Later on, he posted, "It is almost unfathomable that the sun can shine without @jamiehahn here. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you daily," according to the News Observer.
"Jamie lost her struggle to live this morning. We lost a beautiful and loving wife, daughter and friend. We all lost a pure and brave spirit," her family said in a statement, according to the Epoch Times. "She had a gift for bringing us together - black and white, young and old, gay and straight. She challenged us to work together for a better world. Her light will shine on in all of us who knew and loved her."
Police have not released the motive for why Broyhill would have viciously attacked the couple with a knife, according to WJBF- TV.
"Obviously, we'll have someone look at bank records and (FEC) reports and see if people shown on the reports were paid," Miller said, according to the News Observer. He emphasized that he does not know of any law enforcement inquiry into election money and said that any investigation has been limited so far to his campaign.
