'Daft Punk' vs EDM: DJ's Laidback Luke, Sebastian Ingrosso Mock 'Get Lucky' Duo, 'Random Access Memories' Hype on Twitter, House Music Classification Controversy
It has apparently become Daft Punk versus the "new" EDM world, as electronic dance music DJ's like Laidback Luke, Sebastian Ingrosso, & Dirty South "mock" the hype surrounding the 'Get Lucky' duo's upcoming album Random Access Memories and voice their opinions via Twitter about the record that will "save" the industry from its supposed "identity crisis."
While Daft Punk has been dominating music headlines recently with the news of their forthcoming album, dropping in May, and the debut of the first single, other artists in the EDM industry have been creating headlines of their own on social media. The recent posts include Laidback Luke's concerns that 'Get Lucky" doesn't truly classify as house music as well as Sebastian Ingrosso & Dirty South poking fun at the extreme 'Random Access Memories' hype, which is expected to be "all the rage."
The controversy over the current state of "electronic dance music" today was sparked by an interview with Daft Punk that was featured in Rolling Stone magazine a few weeks ago. Whether intentional or not, the French duo made a few "digs" at the newer DJ's contributing to the "static" EDM industry, making comments to Stone like:
"Today, electronic music is made in airports and hotel rooms, by DJs traveling. It has a sense of movement, maybe, but it's not the same vibe as going into these studios that contain specific things."
"Electronic music right now is in its comfort zone and it's not moving one inch," Thomas says. "That's not what artists are supposed to do." He adds that the genre is suffering "an identity crisis: You hear a song, whose track is it? There's no signature. Skrillex has been successful because he has a recognizable sound: You hear a dubstep song, even if it's not him, you think it's him."
While Daft Punk may have had positive things to say about Skrillex, Laidback Luke, an electronic artist known for his work on tracks like "Turbulence" & "Cinema," took to Twitter to express his concerns about the duo's negative comments on today's EDM and the categorization of house music in general (which the DJ doesn't think "Get Lucky" even classifies under):
"Wait so how are Daft Punk saving EDM when they only use live instruments? Then it's not actual electronic dance music," Laidback Luke tweeted on April 25th.
This comment was most likely referring to the statement in the Rolling Stone article that Daft Punk "limited the role of drum machines to just two of the album's thirteen tracks. The only electronics come in the form of a massive, custom-built modular synthesizer that Daft Punk played live on the album, they told me, and an arsenal of vintage vocoders on which they manually manipulated factors like pitch, vibrato and legato"
The controversial question that Laidback Luke posted immediately sparked a twitter war, as EDM-lovers battled about Daft Punk and house/EDM/disco music for nearly 10 hours. Some highlights included:
The "Pogo" DJ "retweeting" the post, "@LaidbackLuke ADM, Acoustic Dance Music."
Followers calling Laidback Luke a hater and him responding, "I'm asking a question, why is that hating? I actually love the song ['Get Lucky'] but don't consider it to be house music."
He also stated that he admired Daft Punk's marketing strategy but "you can't let marketing rule your world. Would u rage to Get Lucky? I love it but in my car."
Further, Luke went on to classify Daft Punk's new single as "disco" because according to him,
"Anything with a kickdrum and that ranges from 122-135 BPM is house. These were the rules when I started in '92."
One follower, defended 'Daft Punk' by criticizing the current state the EDM "culture" by posting on Facebook that, "Saving EDM = Don't jump around the stage like a bunch of posers and spray champagne to a bunch of drugged out 15 year olds."

Laidback Luke was not the only EDM DJ to comment on the "hype" around Daft Punk's highly anticipated album, which comes with extremely high expectations. Sebastian Ingrosso, a member of the "Don't You Worry Child" trio Swedish House Mafia, also playfully "mocked" Daft Punk.
"There's so much hype around Daft Punk's album I am expecting the best thing ever made on planet earth plus giving every mammal orgasm!," the "Calling" DJ tweeted on April 24th.
Fellow DJ 'Dirty South' also chimed in by commenting on Ingrosso's post:
"@SebIngrosso wait! Are they releasing an album???!!!!" (which we can only assume is sarcasm).
Dirty South also posted:
"i love Daft Punk, but this made me laugh with tears," and provided the link to the "shredded" version of 'Get Lucky' featuring Pharrel (seen below).
There seems to be a lot of tension building in the "new" EDM world as Daft Punk reenters the EDM/house/electronic/techo music scene after a long hiatus. While some EDM fans are more favorable towards Daft's different sound than others, one thing that everyone can agree on is that the French duo's 'Random Access Memories' already has fans, critics, and fellow DJ's talking all "around the world."
