5 Shot, 1 Dead, At 'Crab Festival' In Florida: Barry Barney killed, Devonte Tremaine Ocasio Arrested
Five people were shot on Saturday, including a 36-year-old man who was killed, during the annual, so-called "Crab Festival" in Williston, Florida.
The "festival" is an unsanctioned event that is advertised underground through social media and it actually features a series of Hip Hop related street parties rather than content having to do with crabs, according to the Levy County Sheriff's Office, the Sun Sentinel reports. The event, which has seen reported violence in the past, attracted about 10,000 people this year.
Due to the previous violence reports, the Levy County Department of Public Safety always has staff on call in case of emergencies during the event.
"The Levy County Department of Public Safety had pre-staged ambulances and a Medical helicopter in the area for the Festival. The large crowds made it impossible for ambulances to reach the wounded. Despite the large crowds walking and dancing in the roadway, Deputies and EMS personnel were able to evacuate the victims in law enforcement and private vehicles," reads a press release from the Levy County Sheriff's Office, according to the Examiner.
The Sheriff's office reports that Barry Barney of Gainesville was the name of the man who died as a result of his injuries, according to Ocala.com. He died while he was being airlifted to Shands at the University of Florida.
Two other men and two women were also wounded, and one of them had very serious injuries, Ocala reports. Their identities have not yet been released in order to protect their safety.
"Our office believes this may have been motivated by some type of drug-related crimes and we are not going to release the names of the victims for fear of retaliation," said LSO spokesman, Lt. Scott Tummond, according to Ocala.
A man named Devonte Tremaine Ocasio, 19, was arrested in connection with the shooting over the weekend and made his first appearance at Marian County courtroom on Monday, according Channel 20, WCJB.
Ocasio has been charged with attempted first degree murder, discharge of fire arm with injury, aggravated assault with a firearm and the possession of a firearm, the Examiner reports. He is currently being held on $1.5 million bond.
Investigators are not ruling out the possibility of a second shooter, said Lt. Tummond, according to Ocala.
"We have an extensive crime scene, potentially hundreds of witnesses and we don't have all the answers yet," Tummond said, according to Ocala. "Lot's of folks saw stuff, but don't want to come forward either because they are scared or don't want to get involved."
