THE AMERICANS Season 1 Finale Recap (SPOILERS) Episode 13 ' The Colonel:' Who Gets Out Alive? What to Expect in Season 2
The first season of FX's The Americans came to an end last night, leading us into the already ordered second season of the Cold War spy thriller. With Stan and the FBI hot on the trail of the "illegals" from the KGB and Phillip and Elizabeth wary about a meeting, did the season finale pay off? The episode was called "The Colonel," but was there more to it than just this mysterious "contact" that was high up on the chain? (SPOILERS to follow)
Like any other episode this season, "The Colonel" had a huge twist thrown into it that the audience could see coming from early on. Unfortunately for Phillip and Elizabeth, they could not. They had to figure out who would take the "dangerous" mission of meeting with the colonel and who would take the "easy" mission of retrieving the transmitter. Looking back at last week's episode, we know that the severity of these missions is absolutely switched because of the maid's admission to the FBI. Now the FBI used the transmitter to lure out the "illegals," which could result in a capture.
So Phillip takes the mission with the colonel and Elizabeth goes after the transmitter. After being reassigned, Claudia still looks out for her operatives and goes to help Phillip in the "dangerous" mission. Though they discover that Elizabeth is in trouble now.
So what exactly happens? Nothing. Even the meeting with the colonel resulted in lackluster information. Sure the episode had a ton of tension, but all in all it landed flat - except in the family life spectrum.
As the finale concludes, Elizabeth welcomes Phillip back into their home. This of course could set up some difficulties for his fake marriage to Martha as "Carl," but we will have to wait for the next season to see how that works out.
Also, Nina is easily the best character on this show. She is absolutely playing Stan and it is amazing. Season two will belong to her.
