Oprah Winfrey, Jason Collins [VIDEOS]: First Openly Gay NBA Player Interviewed on "Oprah's Next Chapter" with Family
Last week, NBA player Jason Collins came out as gay, making him the first active male player in a major American professional sport to do so. In a special 90-minute interview last night on "Oprah's Next Chapter," Collins had the chance to talk with the television mogul about his decision to come out, his career, and his family. He even addressed some racial issues, how his love life will be affected now, and how he came out to the people closest to him including his twin brother.
In a synopsis of the interview episode of "Oprah's Next Chapter," the show's website states:
"Oprah speaks with NBA player Jason Collins; his twin brother, Jarron; and the Collins family in their first interview together since Jason became the first active male pro athlete in one of the four major American team sports to announce he's gay. Jason reflects on the worldwide reaction following his decision to come out publicly, and relates how he hopes his story will further the conversation around equality.
"Oprah and Jason are joined by his twin brother, former NBA player Jarron Collins; his parents, Portia and Paul Collins; and his sister-in-law, Elsa Collins. Plus, meet the first family member Jason came out to-Teri Jackson, his aunt and a San Francisco Superior Court judge."
In this first clip, Oprah addresses the issue surrounding Jason's race as well as his sexual preference. Collins and Oprah discuss the stigma of being gay in the African American community and also talk a bit about Jason's gay uncle who served as a role model.
Here are some more clips from the interview that also feature Jason's family responding to some questions:
