"Transformers" spinoff "Bumblebee" is officially moving forward as it taps director Travis Knight to helm the movie.

"Bumblebee" finds itself in good hands under Knight's leadership. He was the director of the Oscar-nominated animated film "Kubo And The Two Strings." The sci-fi action "Bumblebee" will be Knight's first live-action movie. Knight is also the president and CEO of Laika, an animation house based in Portland that released critically acclaimed animated features such as "The Boxtrolls," "ParaNorman" and "Coraline."

As per Deadline, Knight will be working on a "Bumblebee" script written by Christina Hodson. Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg are attached as producers together with Hasbro's Brian Goldmer and Stephen Davis.

"Bumblebee" will be centered on the titular Autobot, who is also one of the most prominent characters in the entire "Transformers" movie franchise. For now, there are no reports about the plot and the cast for the spinoff.

However, it was recently hinted that the upcoming movie, "Transformers: The Last Knight" is said to be connected to the "Bumblebee" movie. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura shed some light into the matter in an interview with Collider.

"Some of the things will have a very direct relationship. You'll see some things in ['The Last Knight'] that are laying a pipe. You won't necessarily know that it's laying a pipe for another movie, but it's there," di Bonaventura said. He added that "two lines of mythology" in "Transformers: The Last Knight" opens up the franchise in a way that will be "most provocative, in terms of the movie."

"It's opening a really large universe of what Transformers is, and where they've come from, and how we relate to them, and how they relate to themselves," di Bonaventura said.

The "Bumblebee" movie has a release date of June 28, 2019. With that given release date, "Bumblebee" is expected to lash with Legendary Picture's "Godzilla" sequel in the box office.

"Transformers: The Last Knight," on the other hand, will premiere on June 8, 2018. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg, Josh Duhamel, Stanley Tucci and Anthony Hopkins.
