"Stranger Things" Season 2 has ramped up its list of characters in line with the show's storyline. The installment will introduce a new group of kids in Hawkins and a love interest for Joyce Byers.

"Stranger Things" Season 2 takes place a year after Will Byers' disappearance and rescue from the Upside Down. He is back with his friends and is back in school. During this time, the friends meet new people from their school including a tough girl named Max (Sadie Sink), who becomes a romantic interest for Dustin and Lucas. Max is a bit of a tomboy and rides a skateboard. This would explain why she instantly befriends the boys.

Likewise, they meet Billy, Max's brother, who according to previous character descriptions has a tendency to steal girlfriends. Billy is a confident guy who drives a Camaro. According to Mirror, he does not get along well with the boys. "Stephen King always has really great human villains. The evil in the real world is often as bad or worse than the supernatural evil, so we wanted to introduce a character like that," co-creator Matt Duffer said of Billy's character.

According to The Express, Billy and Max are new in Hawkins. They also have their own dark secrets to hide. The showrunners first confirmed these characters' addition in "Stranger Things" Season 2 on Twitter back in November.

Aside from Billy and Max, "Stranger Things" Season 2 also has added a love interest for Will's mom Joyce. Sean Astin plays Bob Newby, a kind-hearted Radio Shack manager who went to school with Joyce. Bob's presence introduces a love triangle between Joyce and Chief Hopper. "We have Sean Astin... he's Winona's new boyfriend... much to the chagrin to the Chief of Police," Harbour said.

Aside from Billy, Max, and Bob, "Stranger Things" Season 2 has also added two more characters namely Roman and Dr. Owens. Roman (Linnea Berthelsen) has connections to the eerie things that happened at Hawkins lab in Season 1, while Dr. Owens (Paul Reiser) is a Department of Energy employee who is tasked with keeping what happened at the lab a secret.
