Tenacious D Comedy Festival LINEUP: Adam Sandler, Zach Galifianakis, Eric Idle to Appear at 'Festival Supreme' in October
Some of the most memorable moments in comedy have been delivered via song: Monty Python's "Always Look on The Bright Side of Life," Adam Sandler's "The Chanukah Song" and Mastodon's "Linoleum Knife" among others have all delivered laughs with musical accompaniment. Tenacious D, the rock duo consisting of comedian Jack Black and Kyle Gass, is highlighting the genre of "comedy rock" with the "Festival Supreme" in Santa Clara in October.
Although Black has had success in film, his passion for rock music has always been evident through his participation in Tenacious D and the film "School of Rock." Black and Gass decided to bring together some of the biggest names in comedy to participate in musical comedy for the festival.
Two of the biggest names making appearances are Adam Sandler and Eric Idle. Sandler hit his commercial heyday in the '90s with films like "Happy Gilmore," but had made a name for himself producing humorous and crass skits for Saturday Night Live long before. His appearance is a coup for Tenacious D, as Sandler has drawn back from doing comedy appearances in recent years.
Idle is one of the leading men from the renowned Monty Python company, and was the writer and actor responsible for many of the musicals numbers from the show "Monty Python's Flying Circus." Black said he wrote a letter proclaiming his status as a fan to Idle and begged the British comedian to appear. It worked.
Other big names from the comedy world making musical appearances will be Zach Galifinakis, David Scott and Bob Odenkirk of "Mr. Show Fame," Britain's modern oddball comedy troupe "The Mighty Boosh," and Adult Swim's Tim and Eric. Some stand-up artists, including Sarah Silverman, will give performances sans instruments.
Tenacious D plans to have a new album out in 2014. The group's first self-titled album has sold more than a million copies.
