Hugh Jackman, 'The Wolverine': New Trailer Promises New Mutants, Crazy Action Scenes [VIDEO]
For viewers who enjoyed the constant action, historical flashbacks and Hugh Jackman shirtlessness in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," the new trailer for "The Wolverine" promises more of all three.
First, historical flashbacks: The backstory for the plot of the new film is set in motion when Wolverine saves a young Japanese soldier from a nuclear explosion at the end of World War II. Flash forward to the present (the new film takes place after the events in the original "X-Men" trilogy) and that soldier became the head of the most successful business in Japan, and he offers Wolverine the chance to end his suffering by becoming mortal (Wolverine's body heals itself crazy fast, so it's tough for him to die. Plus he's got a metal skeleton).
Where the plot goes from there is kind of tough to figure out because the trailer enters into a montage of action scenes. For example, Wolverine is confronted by dozens of Japanese Yakuza, who ride motorcycles on rooftops for good measure, in an apparent "Kill Bill" homage. Jackman's character fights said mob of course. Later, Wolverine is seen fighting atop a Japanese bullet train. Still later, Wolverine is seen fighting a massive, metallic samurai figure (who's probably the villain Silver Samurai from the X-Men comics...except this version seems to be huge).
Speaking of villains, it seems to be that Viper (formerly known as Lady Hydra) is the main villainess here. Hints include the fact that she dresses in green, she has snake eyes and a snake tongue, and she removes her own skin during the trailer. It also seems that somehow she manages to rob Wolverine of his ability to heal. Whether she proves a femme fatale to our protagonist remains yet to be seen, but she's got competition from Mariko Yashida, who possibly has psychic abilities as a mutant power. Yashida seems to be Wolverine's best friend in this flick.
Oh yeah, and the shirtlessness. It's an X-Men film starring Hugh Jackman. If you thought he wouldn't go shirtless, you're crazy.
