LoLo Jones: Summer Olympic Track Athlete Upsets Bobsled Team Members By Dismissing Her Winter Olympic Paycheck
Olympic track athlete LoLo Jones now faces a hurdle away from her running career: convincing her teammates on the the U.S. bobsled team that she hasn't been spoiled by the lucrative sponsorships available in track and field. Jones hurt her cause on Monday when she posted a video where she complained of her paycheck from the United States Bobsledding Federation.
Jones is shown on the video complaining about the check, which she holds in her hand, for her first seven months of work on the bobsled team. The total? A measly $741.84. After her rant, Jones picks up her phone and pretends to talk to a landlord, whom she tells "I'm going to be a little late on my rent this month."
Although the paycheck does sound pretty small, some of America's biggest names in the sport called her post "a slap in the face." Steven Holcomb, a golf medalist in the sport, points out that as one of the sport's premier athletes he doesn't make all that much, and he doesn't have a sponsorship deal with Nike (as Jones does). Holcomb receives a $2,000 a month stipend from the USBSF (a deal only available to the premier athletes in the group).
The rest of the funds are split to the various members of the group based on results at national and international events. Jones and her sledding partner Jazmine Fenlator won silver at the World Cup in Lake Placid earlier this year, which translated to the check she received. Holcomb has won four golds, which earned him an additional $3,000.
"We're not here for the money. We love the sport," he said. "I love what I do. I wouldn't trade it for the world."
Jones defended her comments by comparing it to track. She said that she and Fenlator had to raise money to sponsor their sled as the USBSF could only sponsor two due to lack of funds. She said that such a distraction could of derailed her if it happened during track. Competition bobsleds run anywhere from $85,000 to $100,000.
