Season 3 of "American Horror Story," subtitled "Coven," premieres this fall and will deal with feminist themes, according to executive producer Tim Minear.

TVLine collected some information from Minear at the Television Critics Association press tour on Friday. "AHS" veterans Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson joined Minear on a panel, along with newcomers Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett.

"There's a feminist theme throughout Coven," Minear said. "There are also themes of race and oppression and family, especially mothers and daughters, along with laughs and scares and a few tears."

Lange said she would "play a witch" in Season 3 and added that, " "I've shot two days so far, so I don't know who the character is yet. It comes in little dribs and drabs."

Paulson will play Lange's character's daughter, Cordelia, and Bassett will play Marie Leveau, who is based on "a woman in the 1800s who was very influential in the city," according to Bassett. "The city" she referenced is New Orleans.

Bates will play Madame LaLaurie, a real-life socialite and serial killer from New Orleans into the 1830s.

Minear also said that "American Horror Story" Season 3 would have a more light-hearted tone.

"I would say that the fun quotient is higher this year," Minear said. "[It's still] a drama, but there is a lot of humor, and we are embracing a velocity and fun with the series this year. It might be a little bit more welcoming to an audience."

"American Horror Story: Coven" premieres in Oct. 2013.
