It looks like Will Smith might just save the world from aliens again, after all.

Director Roland Emmerich sat down with Digital Spy and revealed that the artist formerly known as the Fresh Prince will soon be in talks to return as Captain Steven Hiller in the Independence Day sequel, aka ID2.

"I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn't want to do it at first," Emmerich said. "Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen."

Smith told Digital Spy back in June (when he was promoting After Earth) that he wanted to move away from big blockbusters and that, "I think I'm going to start moving out of that and finding more danger in my artistic choices."

Emmerich also told the site that ID2 could be released in 2015 or 2016.

The director told the following to the New York Daily News in June:

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much. We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new."

Apparently that has now changed.

Bill Pullman, who played the president in the original 1996 blockbuster, and Jeff Goldblum will also reprise their roles in the sequel, though they will likely do so in smaller capacities than the first movie.
