Former Fugees singer Lauryn Hill is a free woman. After serving almost three months in prison, Hill was released today (Oct. 4) from a facility in Danbury, Conn., according to TMZ. Hill had been serving time since July 8 in a minimum-security prison for tax evasion for money she earned between 2005 and 2007.

To help celebrate leaving prison, Hill released a new single last night (Oct. 3), "Comsumerism," via her Tumblr. The track was written and recorded before Hill went to prison and mixed while she was incarcertated. In a statement on her Tumblr, Hill explained the meaning behind the new track.

"Letters From Exile is material written from a certain space, in a certain place. I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it," she wrote. "I haven't been able to watch the news too much recently, so I'm not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and oftentimes contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn't imagine it not being relevant"

Indeed, "Consumerism" is a blast of single. Hill takes on a variety of society's ills, including racism, sexism and of course, consumerism while speed rapping over a simplistic beat.

Listen to "Consumerism" below.

"Consumerism" is the first track from Hill's upcoming project, "Letters from Exile."
