Ghost B.C. release full stream of 'If You Have Ghost' covers EP
There are a few things the Swedish do really, really well. In everyday life, it's cheap furniture and meatballs. In the realm of music, it's theatrical metal and pop.
Leave it to mysterious, Catholicism piss takers Ghost B.C. to cross the metaphorical aural streams of their homeland with an EP of pop covers titled If You Have Ghost.
While the majority of "ironic metal covers" are absolute dogshit, the Dave Grohl-produced Ghost manages to be a compelling listen (and, dare we say, pretty?). This is an album you won't mind throwing on after the novelty has worn off.
Ghost B.C. manage this in two ways: they seem to have a genuine love for the music and they don't METAL everything. The title track (Rory Erickson's "If You Have Ghosts") isn't metal in the slightest. The cover of ABBA's "I Am A Marionette" brings the darkness in the epicly orchestrated instrumentation while leaving the vocals pop-sensible, thereby highlighting the creep factor that the song already possessed.
Army Of Lovers' "Crucified" is an odd take out as the band does transition the song entirely into heavy metal, but only because Papa Emeritus II's rabid growl sounds incredible when coupled with the original's dark and depressing lyrics.
"Waiting For The Night" adds a decent bit of crnch to the high level of theatricality that is already present in any Depeche Mode track before the album closes with excellent live cut "Secular Haze", effectively chasing the pop taste from metalheads mouths before the end of the EP.
If You Have Ghost is available for pre-order now and can be streamed over at CoS.
