Girls' toy commercial may face copyright infringement suit from Beastie Boys
So, the Beastie Boys are notoriously stingy when it comes to licensing their music. That was part of the surprise when toymaker GoldieBlox released their awesome feminist re-working of Licensed To Ill track "Girls." It seemed the Beasties had released their tight grip in the name of a good cause (releasing science and engineering toys that catered to girls).
However, it turns out that GoldieBlox didn't get the Beastie Boys permission to use the track and are facing a potential copyright infringement lawsuit.
GoldieBlox do have a fairly strong case for fair use, should the case make it to court. The girl power-centric lyrics are obviously a parody of the sexist words to the original. (Refresher: Girls - to do the dishes/Girls - to clean up my room/Girls - to do the laundry/Girls - and in the bathroom/Girls, that's all I really want is girls.")
