The Voice Season 5 contestant Matthew Schuler talks Ed Sheeran inspiration, quick chair turns and more

Matthew Schuler reached the Top 6 on Season 5 of NBC's The Voice before his journey ended. But his road to that point actually started back in Season 3, when he was just a college student watching Cassadee Pope win the competition.

In an interview with TVLine, Schuler revealed that he also drew inspiration from Ed Sheeran and the road he took to becoming a famous singer-songwriter.

"He left his home at 16 and went to London to really pursue his dream," Schuler said. "And I got to thinking, 'Ed Sheeran's the man. He's super young and he's a beast.' I knew if I wanted to really make a career out of this, I had to start young and I had to go out there and test the waters and try it out."

Ironically, Schuler wound up on Christina Aguilera's team and worked with Sheeran, who served as her team's Battle Rounds mentor.

"Craziest thing ever," Schuler told the site with a laugh. "Ed Sheeran is the reason why I went to the open call for Season 5."

Schuler also has the distinction of earning the quickest four-chair turnaround from Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton in the history of The Voice. He let out a few words of the song "Cough Syrup" by Young the Giant and the four judges whirled around without missing a beat.

"I can't even tell you. It was crazy. It was amazing. I was freaking out in my head," Schuler said of the moment. "I'm like, 'Oh my God, I've got to finish singing the song!' But there was kind of a release as well, because the hard part was over. I had their attention and I was able to really interact with them. I couldn't have asked for a better introduction to America."
