Putin assures that gay people will be safe at Sochi Olympics by discussing Elton John

A few months back, it was up for debate as to whether Elton John could even enter the country and now Putin is using the openly gay singer as a symbol of the country's tolerance.

Doesn't it make you feel all warm and fuzzy? No?

"People have different sexual orientation. We will welcome all athletes and all guests of the Olympics," he said in an interview with several foreign journalists.

To prove how 'with it' he is (while staunch anti-gay propaganda laws remain on the books), Putin called John "an outstanding person (and) outstanding musician" adding that "millions of our people sincerely love him despite his orientation,"

The spotlight that has shown on Russia's official LGBT stance has only burned brighter in recent months, with the Sochi Winter Olympics drawing near.

Selena Gomez was denied entry into Russia (presumably for her pro-gay views) and John's concert appeared to be in trouble, though it did go on as planned.

"I am deeply saddened and shocked over the current legislation that is now in place against the (homosexual) community here in Russia,"John said during the performance.

"In my opinion, it is inhumane and it is isolating. Harmony is what makes a happy family and a strong society."

Putin has been taking part in a campaign to clean up Russia's international image before the games, a move that largely started with the release of the remaining jailed Pussy Riot members.
