Robert Redford is one of many high-profile actors in the upcoming Marvel sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier aka Captain America 2. The Academy Award-winning actor plays Alexander Pierce, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., and has hinted at being an antagonist in the film.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly at the Sundance Film Festival, which he founded 30 years ago, Redford explained what drew him to the project, which marks his first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

"One of the reasons that I did it was I wanted to experience this new form of filmmaking that's taken over where you have kind of cartoon characters brought to life through high technology. The Avengers series is a product of high technology playing a major role in the new order of filmmaking so I wanted to experience that-I just wanted to know what that was like and I had that opportunity, so for me it was like stepping into new terrain just to experience what it was like."

Captain America: The Winter Soldier stars Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders, as Agent Maria Hill. The film also stars Hayley Atwell, Emily VanCamp, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Toby Jones, Maximiliano Hernandez and Georges St-Pierre.
