Shailene Woodley may not play Mary Jane Watson in 'The Amazing Spider-Man 3'
Shailene Woodley filmed some scenes as Mary Jane Watson for Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but the director cut those scenes from the movie, purportedly to make the story more concise and have a better pace. Webb has said Mary Jane would return in a future movie, presumably The Amazing Spider-Man 3. But Woodley may not step back into the role.
The actress has said before that her commitment to the Divergent film series could hamper her ability to return for The Amazing Spider-Man movies. Woodley spoke to Total Film and revealed that she filmed three scenes during three days for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and that it was nothing too "intense." Total Film then asks directly if she would return to The Amazing Spider-Man film series:
"I have no idea," she said, "and I don't know that I'd even want to do two franchises at this point. Having been through this..."
Her Divergent co-star Theo James interjects at that point.
This situation became even murkier when Variety reported in early December that Lionsgate had green-lit the sequels Insurgent and Allegiant for release on March 20, 2015 and March 18, 2016, respectively. Woodley's commitment to the Divergent trilogy called into question her ability to star in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, as well.
MTV News subsequently caught up with the actress, and Woodley cast some more doubt on her role in the franchise:
"Andrew [Garfield] kills it....I don't know anything but seeing as how they picked up the next two Divergent films, I don't know how I would keep my sanity with two big action films in one year. But, anything can happen, so..."
