Despite plenty of rumors suggesting Brad Pitt landing the lead in HBO's highly anticipated second season of True Detective, reports are claiming his Tree of Life costar Jessica Chastain has been offered the starring role. Creator Nic Pizzolatto earlier this year hinted at a female-led cast, so it looks like this could be confirmed.

The Nerdist reports:

Recent rumors have stated series creator Nic Pizzolatto was seeking a female-driven cast for Season 2 of the hit HBO series, and now today, Nerdist has learned exclusively one of the names that may be on the bill in 2015: Jessica Chastain. According to sources, the Zero Dark Thirty actress has been offered a leading role in the second season but has yet to accept. As for official confirmation, we reached out to representatives for Chastain, who have declined to comment at this time.

We should also mention that the earlier rumors about Brad Pitt could still be true, though the actor would either have a smaller role compared to Chastain. Or perhaps he'd be her partner in the 2015 season? That's not likely, but we can dream, can't we?

Back in March, series creator Nic Pizzolatto revealed the first details of the upcoming second season.

"Okay. This is really early, but I'll tell you (it's about) hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system," he said.
