'Night Shift' Star Brendan Fehr Opens Up About Playing Gay Doctor Drew - 'It Was Uncomfortable For Me'
Brendan Fehr found fame on the hit WB Series Rosewell but since than he has traded in his Mid-West clothes for a stethoscope, to portray Doctor Drew on the new NBC series The Night Shift.
Fehr, who plays an opening gay doctor on the series, teases that on next week's episode viewers will get to meet his on-screen boyfriend, played by Luke MacFarlane. The actor just recently opened up about the challenges of being a heterosexual actor portraying a homosexual man on a TV show.
In an interview with TooFab, Brendan says that when he got the part he knew that it was going to have its challenges.
"It was the challenge of portraying Drew," the actor reveals of what attracted him to the role. "I think it was the risks involved as well. To play a homosexual on network television, what are the risks? There's a whole bunch of them. What are the rewards? Not as many. I just felt like I had something to offer."
The actor, says that he has never once defined himself by his sexuality but more by his personality. "I've never defined myself as being straight, what defines me is who I am, what I believe, the choices I make and how I treat people."
One of the more challenging tasks to deal with while filming, would be having to kiss another man on set, the actor explains.
"It was uncomfortable for me," he explains about locking lips with MacFarlane. "In Episode 106, my boyfriend comes and I don't like kissing guys, it doesn't do anything for me. It's really uncomfortable, but you gotta get past that, his story is bigger than that. The emotion behind that is so much bigger than that. I was scared, petrified in a lot of ways, but I wanted to push myself and see if I could do it."
Brendan admits that this role has made him feel honored, but he just hopes that his portrayal of Drew does justice to the character that the writers have created.
