TEAM USA Track Star Torrin Lawrence Dies After Car & Tractor Trailer Collision

After a summer where things were looking up for Team USA, comes some tragic news. Sprinter Torrin Lawrence, regarded as one of the best in the U.S., has been killed after his car was struck by a tractor trailer. The 25-year-old won a gold medal recently at the IAAF World Relays.

Police say they believe he was driving around Georgia in the early hours of the morning when his car blew a tire, and came to a stop. The star sprinter left his vehicle to call 911, but the vehicle was hit, and crashed into him, killing him. The USA Track & Field CEO Max Siegel issued a statement saying, "Torrin represented USATF with pride and passion, and had an incredible future ahead of him. We join those who will miss him deeply."

The sprinter was one of the best to come out of the University of Georgia, and he holds the NCAA record for the fastest indoor 300m sprint. This is a shocking loss for the sports world, which need not even have happened if things had gone differently by just a few seconds.

After a great World Cup for Team USA, and the high expectations for Team USA at the FIBA Basketball World Cup, things were looking up for America. But now 2014 will also be remembered as the year the U.S. lost a great athlete.
