Miley Cyrus will now have to visit her MTV Video Music Awards date in jail if she wants to see him again.

Jesse Helt, who accepted the VMA for Video of the Year for Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball," got six months in jail after violating his probation for a 2010 arrest, according to the Associated Press.

The homeless teen turned himself in after warrants for his arrest in Oregon were made public following his appearance at the VMAs.

Jesse was arrested for criminal mischief and pleaded no contest to the charges, thus receiving probation. He then violated the probation the next year after he didn't meet with his probation officer or fulfill his community service after moving to Los Angeles to pursue a modeling career. It was at that point in his life Jesse became homeless.

Miley met him at a shelter called My Friends Place earlier this year and then asked him to accompany her to the awards show.

After publicity of his arrests overshadowed his heartfelt acceptance speech, Miley tweeted her frustration with the media:

"People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included," she also wrote.

Then adding: "I hope that this can be the start of a national conversation about youth homelessness and how to end it."

In court, he said he'd "like to be viewed as a good person, not as a nuisance to society" and asked Judge Monte Campbell for leniency, but was sent to jail anyway.

Jesse's mother told ABC News that she was pleased that decided to take responsibility for his crimes and turn himself in.

"I'm proud of him for doing what's right," she said. "I don't condone running away from a problem."

Do you think Jesse should be serving time? Has the media overshadowed the problem of teen homelessness by focusing on Jesse's criminal past?
