NBA MVP Kevin Durant Injured Right Foot, Surgery Possible; Oklahoma Thunder Superstar Out 6-8 Weeks

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Sunday that its superstar and reigning league Most Valuable Player, Kevin Durant, is injured and will be out indefinitely to open the NBA season, Deadspin is reporting. According to the team's announcement, released on behalf of Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti, the injury is to Durant's right foot and will likely require surgery.

"After practice yesterday, Kevin made us aware of discomfort in his right foot," Presti said. "We proceeded to perform the necessary imaging studies to determine the cause of his discomfort. At this stage, Kevin has been diagnosed with a Jones fracture. Traditional treatment of this injury requires a surgical procedure and recent NBA cases have resulted in a return to play in 6-8 weeks. We are in the process of collaboratively evaluating the most appropriate next steps with Kevin, his representatives, and Thunder medical personnel. Until a course of action is determined, we are unable to provide a timeline specific to Kevin's case."

Durant was back with the Thunder for the preseason, as they get set to open the regular season against the Portland Trailblazers later this month, following his summer of training with Team USA.

In 81 games with the Thunder last year, Durant led the team - and the entire league - with an average of 32.0 points per game. He also averaged 7.4 rebounds in 38.5 minutes per game en route to his MVP honors.

To say that the Thunder will miss him is an understatement.

"I'm honestly crying right now. #PrayforKD and a quick recovery @KDTrey5," wrote Twitter user @JFreezy555.
