The annual Perseid meteor shower event is going on now: August 11 evening - August 12 early morning. Depending on which city you're in, you may see a sky of shooting stars, a few here and there, or none at all. People on the west coast can catch the stars without losing too much shut eye (California, Utah, Oregan, Yosemite, San Diego folks)

The reason why it's called the Perseid meteor shower is because the shooting stars appear to be radiated from the Perseus constellation.

The event happens once a year typically around late July or early August.

Jeremie Vaubaillon from The Institut de Mecanique Celeste et de Calcul des Ephemerides (IMCCE) came up the calculation for when the meteor shower will occur.
