Could 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' Directors Anthony and Joe Russo Helm 'The Avengers: Infinity War'?

Now that Marvel has announced its Phase Three movie slate, the pieces can start to fall into place with regard to actors, directors and the like. The Avengers: Infinity War, which will be split into two parts, is obviously a major focal point, and a new report indicates that the third Avengers installment could already be on the right track.

Rumors began before Marvel announced Infinity War that Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo were in talks to take over for Joss Whedon and helm the third Avengers movie. This was little more than a rumor at the time, but now Deadline reports that the brothers could direct the movie.

"The Russo are building up their Marvel cred with this all-star outing, and I keep hearing they will step up to the ultimate Marvel all-star team and take the reins of The Avengers franchise from Joss Whedon, possibly with that next film that will shoot back to back."

Captain America: The Winter Soldier received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and fans alike, and the Russo brothers got a good portion of the praise for their work. So while it might hurt some fans to lose Whedon and his fantastic work on The Avengers franchise, the Russos would make more than suitable replacements. It's unclear what this would mean for Whedon and his future with Marvel. He might just want a little time off, or he might depart the Marvel Cinematic Universe entirely.
