Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton Involved In Car Crash In Charlotte [PHOTO]

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was in a car crash Tuesday morning in Charlotte, but the former Heisman Trophy winner is "conscious and smiling" according to the Charlotte Observer.

The Observer reported the crash took place at around 12:30 pm ET on the Church Street Bridge above I-277 in uptown Charlotte. Newton was taken to the hospital in an ambulance at around 12:50 pm ET. The publication notes the crash was a two-car wreck.

Steve Crump of WBTV reported that Newtown did not want to be transported and that the quarterback suffered no injuries, according to a police source.

A short time later Doug Miller of the Charlotte Observer reported that Newton did suffer injuries, but that they are not life threatening.

Tow trucks took Newton's wrecked truck away.

Brad Panovich reported that witnesses say one of the cars involved in the crash ran a stop sign.

"The crash occurred just a few short blocks from the Panthers' practice facility. Newton's black Dodge pickup truck was overturned as a result of the crash. Newton was placed onto a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance. According to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department source obtained WBTV, Newton sustained no injuries, and was taken to the hospital only as a precaution."

Newton has thrown for 2812 yards and rushed for 425, scoring 19 total touchdowns in 12 games for the 4-8-1 Panthers. He was drafted with the No.1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft after leading Auburn University to the national championship. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2011 and 2013.
