The Most Popular Word Of 2014 Is An Emoji - See What Else Made The Top 10 List This Year!
Each year, the Global Language Monitor comes out with a list of the most popular words of the months gone by. The annual list this year has a bit of a surprise right at the top, though. You might not be too taken aback to learn that the most popular word of 2014 isn't actually a word at all - it's an Emoji! The heart Emoji has topped the list of the most popular words of the last year, with some pretty great runner-ups making the top 10. Check it out below!
According to the people over at GLM, the goal of the organization is to "analyzed and catalogued the latest trends in word usage and word choices and their impact on the various aspects of culture." In 2014, this process produced an emoji as the most popular word of the year.
"The Emoji ideograph for Heart (and Love) is the Top Word for 2014 according to the 15th Annual survey of the English language by the Global Language Monitor," the study concluded, according to UPROXX. "The Heart and Love emoji, emoticon, and variations thereof appear billions of times a day around the world...This is the first time an ideograph has captured Word of the Year honors."
Here is the top ten list of most popular words of the last year from the Global Language Monitor:
1. The ♥ emoji
2. Hashtag
3. Vape
4. Blood Moon
5. Nano
6. Photobomb
7. Caliphate
8. (White) privilege
9. Bae
10. Bashtag
What do you think of this list? Some of these words are pretty interesting, especially "Hashtag," considering it's really just a symbol. Despite its use as a form of shorthand, it looks like we couldn't help typing out the whole word!
