Adam Sandler Died: Ridiculous Celebrity Twitter Death Hoax of the Week
"R.I.P" Bill Cosby, Morgan Freeman, Lindsay Lohan, Alfonso Ribeiro, Eddie Murphy... now comedian Adam Sandler? You read that right - another celebrity death hoax hit the worldwide web over the weekend and on Monday morning, sending Twitter fans of the "Billy Madison" funny guy into a panicked frenzy. But no worries, "Happy Madison Productions" enthusiasts - rumors of 46-year-old Sandler's freak-accident death are totally false - just another morbid prank brought to you by a recent "R.I.P" Facebook page and the tricksters at Global Associated News.
The "R.I.P" Facebook page, which has garnered over 36,000 likes so far, reports that the famous actor/director died on Sept. 8, 2012. If fans were to Google "Sandler's death" to get more info, they probably would run across the Global Associated News post.
Global Associated News is a hoax website that allows users to plug a celebrity name into a search engine which then generates a fake celebrity death headline. Here is the "news breaking" post regarding Sandler's "devastating" death over the weekend:
"Actor Adam Sandler is reported to have died shortly after a snowboard accident earlier today - September 10, 2012. (Obviously the website generates false up-to-the-date deaths).
The actor & novice snowboarder was vacationing at the Zermatt ski resort in Zermatt, Switzerland with family and friends. Witnesses indicate that Adam Sandler lost control of his snowboard and struck a tree at a high rate of speed.
Adam Sandler was air lifted by ski patrol teams to a local hospital, however, it is believed that the actor died instantly from the impact of the crash. The actor was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played any part in his death."
If readers stop and take a closer look at the Global Associated News site, it becomes quite obvious that something's a little fishy about the reports. The death rumors were intensified this time around with the fake "R.I.P. Adam Sandler" Facebook page, which then blew up in tweets all over Twitter.
Funny that some fans still fall for such cruel lies - fellow comedian Eddie Murphy supposedly "died" of a similar snowboarding accident sometime back in August. That death incident report was indeed false as well. Reports from Monday morning (Sept. 10) also claim that heartthrob Channing Tatum died from a similar freak snowboarding accident over the weekend - not true. In fact, an almost identical post about Sandler's passing away was just posted on Global Associated News back in June. What's with all these people trying to kill off celebrities on the web?
While some poor Sandler fans fell for the false report, others are beginning to catch on to the morbid online death hoax trend. Supposedly Sandler is alive and well and currently filming "Grown Ups 2."
