We're not too sure about the possibility of a G.I. Joe 3 movie, but new rumors are suggesting that filmmaker D.J. Caruso could be named director of the project! Caruso is no stranger to thrillers with some action mixed in (Disturbia and Eagle Eye), so this could definitely work out! The third installment of Paramount's Hasbro movie franchise has yet to lock down returning cast member Channing Tatum, but reports suggest that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is attached to reprise the role of Roadblock in the film. Will he approve of Caruso as the director, though?

The Hollywood Reporter reported on this news, also mentioning that G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu was attached to the project but backed out for another film and Martin Campbell was also rumored to direct, but nothing came out of that. Plus, Slash Film points out that screenwriter Jonathan Lemkin (Lethal Weapon 4, Shooter, The Devil's Advocate), who took over for Evan Daugherty (Divergent, Snow White and the Huntsman), penned the most recent version of the film's script. A third writer could come in if Caruso inks a deal as director, though, so any information of plot details or story is up in the air.

Deadline reports: "It's early days, but sources said this is all looking quite promising."

What do you think of Caruso helming the highly anticipated G.I. Joe sequel, with Johnson as the movie's leading man? Are you hoping Channing Tatum returns, too, or would you like to see some fresh faces? Let us know what you think of this recently revealed movie news in the comments section below!

According to IGN, this new film has a release date set for 2016, so a director and a cast should be decided on soon.
