Peanut Butter Recall 2012 Expands: 76 Peanut and Almond Products Could be Linked to Salmonella Outbreak
An initial peanut butter recall of one Trader Joe's product - Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter - was issued over the weekend following a multi-state salmonella illness outbreak tied to that specific produce and brand. Now it turns out that 76 types of peanut butter and almond butter products manufactured by the New Mexico-based food company Sunland Inc. must be recalled from grocery shelves, expanding beyond that of just Trader Joe's stores.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a statement on Tuesday which confirmed that currently 30 people in 19 states have been infected with the outbreak strain of salmonella Bredeney after having had ingested the Trader Joe's peanut butter brand. Other recalled Trader Joe's products include Valencia Peanut Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds, Crunchy and Salted and Trader Joe's Almond Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds, Crunchy and Salted.
The Food and Drug Administration along with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have linked Sunland Inc. to the salmonella outbreak, since the company manufactures and packages the Trader Joe's products in-question. While no other Sunland peanut butter or almond butter products have been linked to illnesses, they have been recalled from shelves because they were manufactured with the same equipment as the Trader Joe's products.
Sunland Inc. manufactures and packages a number of brand name products besides the Sunland and Trade Joe's name - recalled products are sold with labels including Fresh & Easy, Open Nature, Sprouts and Archer Farms. For a full list of recalled items check out Sunland's website.
