Shark Kills Surfer Francisco Javier Solorio Jr. In California: Almost Two Years After Lucas Ransom's,19 Death
A 39-year-old surfer was killed by a shark off the Vandenberg Air Force Base coastal beach in California. Francisco Javier Solorio Jr. was bitten in his upper torso by a shark.
Sheriff Sgt. Mark A. Williams said, "[Solorio] had a friend who he was surfing with who saw the shark bite or hit the man," Williams added, "His friend ended up swimming over and pulling him from the water where he received first aid."
In efforts to save the man's life, friends called 911 and proceeded to help him. The victim who was not affiliated with the Air Force was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Apparently, there were no shark warning signs posted on the beach before the incident happened. Warnings are only posted if there were recent sightings, Lt. Erik Raney said, "We've had shark sightings up and down the Santa Barbara coastline pretty frequently recently."
An incident in July left a man injured after a great white shark bit through his kayak causing the man to be thrown from his vessel near Santa Cruz.
Solorio's death comes two years after 19-year-old, Lucas Ransom, who was a student at the University of California, Santa Barbara was killed by a shark while body-boarding.
