Sharmeka Moffitt, 20, claimed three men wrote initials KKK on the car and set her on fire, but now police believed that she fabricated the story and her third-degree burns were self-inflicted.

Sunday, the Louisiana woman said she was doused with flammable liquid by three hooded men while walking on a trail in Winnsboro. Moffitt suffered burns on more than half of her body. After two days of investigating, police say that Moffitt's fingerprints were found on the lighter and lighter fluid that were found on the scene.

According to KSLA reports, during a news conference, Winnsboro Police Chief Lester Thomas said, "The investigation...has revealed that this was not an attack but a self-inflicted incident that happened to her."

Moffitt's family released a statement saying, "Our family is devastated to learn the circumstances surrounding our daughter's injuries," the statement continued. "While this was not the resolution we had expected, it is a resolution, and we appreciate the thorough investigation by the local and state police as well as federal agencies."

Currently, the young woman is in critical condition in the Regional Burn Center at LSU Medical Center. The motive behind her self-inflicted injuries are unknown at this moment.
