Robin Roberts Update on 'GMA,' Tells Oprah 'I Can't Wait to Come Back' after Bone Marrow Transplant [VIDEO]
Guest host Oprah Winfrey had the privilege to speak with popular news broadcaster Robin Roberts when the 51-year-old called in to "Good Morning America" for the first time since her recent bone marrow transplant. Roberts updated her fellow cast members and fans on her health and recovery condition, exclaiming that she "can't wait to come back" to her post on the hit ABC morning show.
Oprah and the "Good Morning America" crew, decked-out in bright, funky green slippers, listened in as an upbeat Roberts gave her update: "It's day 35. Thirty-five days ago I had my bone marrow transplant, and it is a journey, my friend, as you have taught me. I am so incredibly blessed to be doing as well as I am. Some days I do feel like I am 35 days old and can't get my head off the pillow. But those days are becoming fewer and fewer."
Roberts has remained extremely positive and strong throughout her entire struggle - the television news anchor took a leave-of-absence from her post on "GMA" on Aug. 30 to begin cancer treatment for her MDS - the same day, she jetted off to Mississippi to spend time with her ailing mother, who died later that evening. After spending some time grieving with family, Roberts returned to NYC to prepare for her bone marrow transplant. She was admitted to the hospital in September and after a three-week stay was dismissed on Oct. 11. She has since been recovering at home.
Now, Roberts can't wait to fully recover and finally return to work - "I can't wait to come back! It's just about understanding the moment. Why I am here now." Oprah insisted that she even felt Roberts' presence when she walked onto the "GMA" set on Thursday (Oct. 25).
Roberts currently keeps busy by writing in her journal and keeping fans and followers updated through Twitter posts. According to Roberts, it is the love and praise from supporters that really keeps her going - "I am so appreciative of the outpouring. Not just for me, but for everyone that is facing a challenge."
