U.S. Sailor Found Dead: Samuel Lewis Stiles' Body Found at Train Station in Japan, Accident involving Alcohol? [DETAILS]
Japanese police report that U.S. sailor Samuel Lewis Stiles was found dead at the Haiki train station in Nagasaki Prefecture early Sunday morning (Oct. 28). Police are currently investigating whether 2nd Class Petty Officer Stiles' death was an accident or crime. Stiles was dressed in civilian clothing and had no personal belongings on his body at the time of his death, but CNN reports that the sailor was discovered "surrounded by [several] alcoholic drink cans."
25-year-old Stiles was found dead on a train platform at Haiki Station at approximately 5 a.m. on Sunday. When police discovered Stiles' body, his forehead appeared to have been bleeding and his windbreaker was burnt. The Chinese news agency Xinhua alleges the young U.S. sailor may have died after climbing on top of a "stationary train," maybe in an attempt to sneak in through the roof. Stiles may have gotten electrocuted by an overhead power line, which resulted in his falling off the train to his death.
It is thought that Stiles may have been out in breach of his curfew the night of his death. Earlier in October, Japanese officials arrested two other U.S. sailors for allegedly raping a local woman. Japanese officials and citizens were extremely angered by the case, so the U.S. military imposed a curfew on all U.S. troops in Japan. U.S. military personnel are currently restricted to bases, personal homes, or hotels between 11 p.m.- 5a.m. in Japan. No signs of violence were found at the scene of Stiles' death, so the case has yet to be ruled as part of a crime.
Spokesman for Commander Naval Forces Japan Jon Nylander promises there will obviously be an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Stiles' death.
