42 Years in A Coma: Edwarda O'Bara Dies at 59 After Falling into Deep Diabetic Coma in 1970, Mother's Bedside Loyalty Inspires Book
The Miami Herald reports that Edwarda O'Bara, a Florida woman who spent a shocking 42 years in a diabetic coma, passed away at the age of 59 on Wednesday, Nov. 21. O'Bara was a high school student in 1970 when she supposedly fell suddenly ill. One day she threw-up her medicine and slipped into a deep, permanent state of unconsciousness. She remained in that dormant, diabetic coma for over four decades.
Before falling into a coma, the young teen asked her mother, Kay O'Bara, to never leave her side. Kay kept her promise to her ailing daughter all her life, until her own death just five years ago. That's when Kay's other daughter Colleen O'Bara took on the responsibilities to care for her unresponsive sister at her Miami Gardens home until Edwarda's death this week.
Kay O'Bara, a devout Catholic, insisted that during her longtime stay alongside Edwarda's eventual deathbed, she consistently felt the presence of the Virgin Mary throughout the room. Such faith and loyalty motivated author Dr. Wayne Dyer to write a book about the inspirational story entitled "A Promise Is A Promise: An Almost Unbelievable Story of a Mother's Unconditional Love and What It Can Teach Us".
Edwarda O'Bara continued to receive loving and supportive letters and visitors from around the world up until the time of her death.
Colleen O'Bara wrote this touching message on Edwarda's personal website on Thanksgiving day (Thursday, Nov. 22):
Dear Angels:
"It is with great sadness I inform everyone my sister Edwarda is now with the Lord in Heaven. Yesterday while taking care of Edwarda I noticed her looking directly at me and gave me the biggest smile I had ever seen.
She then closed her eyes and joined my Mom in Heaven.
