Bus Kills 6-Year-Old Boy: David Granados Crushed to Death After Bus Slams into NY Home, 7-year-old Injured Brother Remains in Hospital
A New York transit city bus manically swerved to avoid hitting a pedestrian before slamming into a suburban home in Hempstead on Tuesday (Nov. 27), wounding several and tragically killing a 6-year-old boy who was in the house at the time of the accident. According to reports, young David Granados was walking out from his bedroom in the multi-family home when the bus rammed into the building, pinning him amongst the wreckage and ultimately killing him. Granados' 7-year-old brother Josue was sleeping at the time, and woke up screaming in a bloody panic before being transported to a local Long Island hospital to treat his minor injuries. Eleven passengers on the bus were also treated for injuries.
Police report that a Nassau Inter County Express bus plowed into the two-story home at approximately 9:30 p.m. Tuesday evening after the driver veered off the road in order to avoid hitting an oblivious jaywalker. Apparently the pedestrian (who was crossing at a red light) ignored the driver's constant horn-blaring, forcing the bus to swerve and hop the curve - ultimately striking and completely wrecking the Hempstead home. The young brothers happened to be in the tragic path of the bus' horrific crash.
"The two boys were supposed to be sleeping, but the little one was up," said neighbor Jose Antonio Villagran, who also lived in the two-family home. "He happened to be walking in the spot the bus hit ... I heard a big 'Boom!' and I thought it was the end of the world."
Granados and his family were promptly transported to Winthrop-University Hospital, where David was pronounced dead and Josue was treated for minor glass cuts (he is currently in stable condition and should be fine).
The mother of the boys was making school lunch for her two sons when the bus suddenly struck the home at 505 Fulton St. - she is currently keeping a vigil at the Mineola hospital. "She's not doing well," said family-friend Alida Gutierrez, who happened to be visiting at the time of the crash. "We could not believe a bus just crashed into the house. The bus hit the youngest (boy)."
While eleven bus passengers were treated for minor injuries, David and Josue were the only two victims out of the 12 residents residing in the Hempstead home. According to reports, the whole front of the house was sheared off on impact.
Police confirm that the jaywalker went unharmed - there are no indications that alcohol, drugs, or speeding were involved in the fatal crash.
Thoughts and condolence go out to David Granados' family and friends for their tragic and unfortunate loss.
