The Carolina Panthers vs. the Kansas City Chiefs battle it out on the turf at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 1:00 p.m. E.T. in week 13 of the NFL regular season. Kansas City takes the field on Sunday just hours after tragedy struck on Saturday, Dec. 1 when linebacker Jovan Belcher tragically shot the mother of his three-month-old child (Kasandra M. Perkins) and ultimately killed himself in a shocking murder-suicide.The Kansas City and NFL community (as well as the entire nation) was left speechless and mourns the loss of of Belcher and Perkins going into Sunday afternoon's game. Police report that after Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend on Saturday, he drove to the Arrowhead Stadium to thank his Chiefs general manager Scott Piolo and coach Romeo Crennel for giving him an amazing opportunity to play in the NFL. He then tragically shot himself in the head in the parking lot in front of the two shocked Chiefs representatives. Belcher's motives for such a tragic act are still unknown - close friends and family insist that the couple had been extremely happy (especially with the birth of their daughter Zoey Michelle Belcher on September 11, 2012 - Zoey is now safely in the custody of her grandmother).
Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt recently shared Kansas City's condolences in a public statement: "The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today's events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy... We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted... We will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities and work to ensure that the appropriate counseling resources are available to all members of the organization."
Even after such unexpected tragedy, the game must go on.
The Panthers are currently ranked no 28 in ESPN's power rankings going into week 13, with three wins and eight losses. Unfortunately the Chiefs snag the bottom spot at no 32, with a meager one win and 10 losses.According to sports analyst Ashley Fox, "They have one win, but expectations were that they'd win the division. Not good times in Kansas City."
