Jovan Belcher, Girlfriend Kasandra M. Perkins Murder-Suicide: 3-Month-Old Daughter Zoey Eligible to Receive $1 Million from NFL
Following the devastating murder-suicide involving NFL linebacker Jovan Belcher and his 22-year-old girlfriend Kasandra M Perkins, a young daughter is left to grow up without the love and support of a mother and father. Now reports confirm that orphaned infant Zoey (who turns three-months-old on Dec 11), is eligible to receive up to $1 million in financial assistance from the NFL under the professional sports league's Surviving Child benefit. The estate of the late Chiefs player states that under terms of the NFL's collective-bargaining agreement, Zoey will receive $108,000 annually over the next four years, $48,000 in the fifth year, and then $52,000 each year until age 18 (or 23 if decides to attend college).
Belcher's NFL collective-bargaining agreement was ratified in August 2011. Zoey is therefore eligible to receive $9,000/month for the next 48 months, and at least $4,000/month after she turns five until she becomes an adult or graduates from college. The young child will also be covered under the league's health care benefits plan for the next five years.
Although NFL beneficiaries are kept confidential, reports confirm that Belchers heirs will receive $600,000 in life insurance plus $200,000 for each credited season. An additional $100,000 currently held in a retirement account that will also go to his estate.
Belcher (who was in his fourth season as a linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs) shot Kasandra Perkins to death on Saturday morning (Dec. 1) in the couple's shared home - his mother Cheryl Shepherd and baby daughter Zoey were also in the household at the time of the killing. He then made the 10-minute drive to Chiefs headquarters at Arrowhead Stadium, where he killed himself in the parking lot in front of head coach Romeo Crennel, general manager Scott Pioli, and several others.
Details surrounding the tragic NFL murder-suicide remain unclear, with many bizarre stories continuing to pop up on many social media sites (like the fact that Belcher spent the night partying with another woman, Brittni Glass, the night before the killings).
Services for 25-year-old Belcher were held on Wednesday, and a funeral for Perkins is scheduled for Thursday (Dec. 6).
3-month-old Zoey is currently under the care of her grandmother, Cheryl Shepard.
