Ellen DeGeneres Ad: One Million Moms Appalled by 'Offensive' JC Penny Christmas Commercial, Homosexuality the Real Issue? [VIDEO]
JC Penny's decision to team up with popular television host Ellen DeGeneres has angered the conservative media watchdog group One Million Moms... again. According to the "Today Show," members of the Christian organization are completely appalled and offended by a recent JC Penny Christmas commercial featuring the quirky comedian having a humorous tête-à-tête with three of Santa's elves. While One Million Moms insist that the ad is completely inappropriate because it includes many slight yet offensive side jokes (such as poking fun at the elves' heights), many people believe the group is merely still angered by the fact that JC Penny has hired an open homosexual spokeswoman to head its campaign.
Here is the JC Penny holiday ad which has offended so many members of One Million Moms:
OMM recently released this official statement explaining why they find the commercial so offensive:
"Since April, JC Penney's has not aired Ellen DeGeneres in one of their commercials until now. A new JCP ad features Ellen and three elves. JCP has made their choice to offend a huge majority of their customers again. Christians must now vote with their wallets. We have contacted JC Penney's several times in the past with our concerns, and they will not listen. They have decided to ignore our complaints so we will avoid them at all costs."
But many other people don't seem to understand what the problem is - and insist it is OMM's anti-gay stance that has members so angered:
"There is nothing wrong with this. 'One million moms'... needs to relax, worry about raising their kids and not spending time & energy on hating a '30 second' holiday clip of elves and Ellen at a diner. Really?" NBC quotes one source.
"This is very frustrating. One Million Moms needs to re-read their Bible. The group is upset over someone who is gay being in a family commercial...are they going to start looking into the backgrounds of all people who act in commercials," writes one YouTube user. "I mean, are they going to get upset over the person who is having premarital sex, participating in adultery, telling lies. Jesus died on the cross to forgive us of our sins, and he doesn't hold grudges or keep tally marks. Move on!"
Another defensive viewer states, "Offended: A word synonymous with being just a whiny person. If they don't like what they see they act like children having a tantrum in a store for not getting their way."
Back in February, One Million Moms (a branch founded by the anti-gay conservative Christian group American Family Association) publically condemned JC Penny for hiring DeGeneres (a lesbian) as a spokesperson for their company:
"Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families. By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JC Penney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years."
Such a response was met with criticism from many loyal DeGeneres supporters.
What do Mstarz readers think about JC Penny's "innocent" Christmas ad - is it truly offensive, or is One Million Moms still heated up over the fact that DeGeneres is gay?
The One Million Moms website states, "Our goal is to stop the exploitation of our children, especially by the entertainment media (TV, music, movies, etc.). Mom, OneMillionMoms.com is the most powerful tool you have to stand against the immorality, violence, vulgarity and profanity the entertainment media is throwing at your children. It is time to fight back!"
