Pog Mo Thoin, Robert Gleason Execution First of 2013: Virginia Death Row Convict tells Authorities to 'Kiss My Ass' in Irish Gaelic
Convicted death row felon Robert Gleason Jr. was pronounced dead by electrocution in Virginia on Wednesday, January 16 at approximately 9:08 p.m. - making him the country's first execution of 2013. Moments before his death, the 42-year-old convicted murderer (originally from Boston) turned to authorities and muttered the Irish Gaelic phrase, "Pog mo thoin"... indeed, Gleason's final words to his executioners were "Kiss my ass." And that is how Gleason, Greensville's first inmate to choose electrocution over lethal injection since 2010, ended his three-year reigning terror over the correctional center in Jarratt, VA.
According to reports, Gleason was sentenced to life in prison for a murder back in 2007. He admitted to shooting Mike Jamerson, whose son was cooperating with a federal investigation into a methamphetamine ring that Gleason happened to be involved in. Gleason was assigned to Virginia's Wallens Ridge State Prison in May 2009.
The cold-blooded killer did not want live the rest of his life behind bars - he vowed to continue killing until authorities agreed to strap him in the electric chair. Gleason managed to strangle and kill two fellow inmates (Harvey Watson with strips of bed sheets and Aaron A. Cooper with a wired "religious necklace") before authorities finally heeded his morbid warnings.
Gleason once told the Associated Press while serving his life term, "Why prolong it? The end result's gonna be the same... The death part don't bother me. This has been a long time coming. It's called karma...'Someone needs to stop it. The only way to stop me is put me on death row."
And it seems Gleason still had no regrets going into Wednesday evening's execution... marking his final words with the Irish curse, "Pog mo thoin."
In Virginia and nine other states, inmates on death row can still choose between electrocution and lethal injection.
